BodyGem® Metabolism Test
The BodyGem® is a state-of-the-art, indirect calorimeter that accurately measures resting metabolic rate (RMR).
Translation: It tells you how many calories you need.
What is RMR and why take the test?
RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories our body needs at complete rest to perform vital body functions. It can count for up to 75% of your total calorie needs. RMR is dependent on many things including age, gender, body weight, body composition, activity level, stress, eating habits and genetics, to name a few.
What the BodyGem® offers that predictive equations can’t is the ability to get a personalized reading that will capture the effect these factors have on your metabolism. This number, combined with your daily activity and exercise routine, allows our Registered Dietitian to create calorie intake and nutrition recommendations specific to your health, fitness or weight goals.
Calorie needs are not a one-size-fits-all, and being off by a few hundred calories a day can mean the difference between losing and gaining weight, or having a stand-still on your scale.
How does it work?
You will receive a disposable mouthpiece that is attached to the BodyGem® device and fits similar to mouthguard. By breathing into the device, oxygen consumption VO2 is measured, which is a direct indicator of your resting metabolic rate. You will be seated in a comfortable position, holding the device for approximately 15 minutes until the results are displayed on the screen’s digital device.
Prior to your BodyGem® Metabolism Test you must fast from food and caffeine for 4 hours (water is ok!) and refrain from exercise or additional physical activity for 12 hours to obtain the most accurate reading of your resting metabolic rate.
