Just 1% Better

We have had quite a few new clients at the studio the past few weeks, and one of my favorite parts of the assessment/intake process is talking to clients about their goals and how they think about and mark progress. Goals that often come up are centered around weight loss “I want to lose 50 lbs” and while that is a very specific and measurable goal, and so from a technical goal setting standpoint that is a good goal, the length of time that it could realistically take to meet that goal can be demotivating for some people. We also know that weight loss isn’t necessarily linear and ups and downs may derail you. Similar things can be said for goals like “I want to get stronger.” If you know us, you know we love a good non-scale victory, but sometimes those types of goals are harder to quantify. How will you know when you “are stronger?” Don’t get me wrong, I am definitely not saying don’t set goals, but I want to challenge you to change your thinking and your focus a little bit.

Instead of just focusing on your end goal, try to focus on continuous improvements that will help you reach your goal. By breaking down your large goal into small, daily tasks and choices, your goal becomes a by product.

“Being healthy isn’t just about what you do in the gym or in the kitchen – it’s about the in between too and how it all fits together.” ~ Ayesha Curry

Remember that progress is a series of small, sometimes imperceptible, improvements that add up over time. It’s the decision to drink water over soda when you eat out. It’s the conscious decision to take the stairs instead of the elevator. It’s about all of the little decisions you make every day that affect your physical and mental health.

Can you focus on improving just 1% each day? As you stack the 1% day after day, you’ll look back after a month, 6 months, a year and realize just how far you’ve actually come.
