Be An AHB Rockstar: Adri’s Journey – Week…?

May 22, 2012AHB Rockstars, UncategorizedBy A Healthy Balance

Adri’s had a few hiccups along the way, but ultimately achieved self acceptance. Read on for her final post..

Okay, so it’s been awhile….which is totally my fault. And since this wellness journey has suddenly become one of me learning how to accept myself and life’s inconsistencies, that’s really what this blog post will be about, too.

As you know, this whole thing started mostly about fitness and nutrition. I wanted to lose weight, get healthy, feel good. And, even as my plan has fallen off-track because of vacations, and funerals, emotional stuff, random acts of binging and other stupid excuses, one thing has remained relatively consistent: having these scheduled workout appointments with Alicia has literally been the only thing keeping me to it.

I gained weight back. My nutrition plan went to hell. Some weeks I just didn’t get to the gym for cardio. But yes, for the first time ever in my life, I can say I worked out at least twice a week, every week.

Another thing that totally inspired me was my trip to Costa Rica a few weeks ago. I had the chance to do some things I seem to never have time to do — go hiking, swimming, even surfing. I wasn’t afraid to get in a bathing suit as I had for years; I just did it, and I swam for hours. Now that I’m back, I’m pumped to start getting active with outdoor activities, and telling the cardio machine at the gym to shove it.

Figuring out what’s going to work for me to keep me active in the long-run is huge. Sure, I’ll have to get to the gym once in awhile, but replacing that with exhilarating hikes or days in the water will be good for me. Even doing outdoor bootcamp workouts last year kicked my butt but made me so much happier than trudging on an elliptical under some dreary fluorescent lights.

So, I may not be thinner. But, man, I’m seriously muscular. Slacking on my cardio routines but keeping up with my strength training has still kept me in the game, feeling like I can pick up where I left off if I ever fall off routine again. It’s still a great way to pick up guys at the bar, too, since everyone always wants to go to the “gun show.”
